Professional Scribe (Pro~Scribe) Pro~Scribe Express
"To write with the skill of a pro."
=====================================================================
Here's a summary of features we recently added to Pro~Scribe.
Version 4.8
...........
We added a BENCHMARK feature. Look for it at Pro~Scribe's Results
Summary. What's a Benchmark?
* Suppose Pro~Scribe tells you you've written something at the
10th grade reading level. Is that appropriate?
* It depends. Who is your audience? If you're writing for
an educated, technically sophisticated audience, it's probably
okay. But for average adults or children, it may be too complex.
* Once Pro~Scribe displays it's results summary, press [B] to see
how your writing compares with different benchmarks:
- Average Adults
- The New York Times
- The Wall Street Journal
- Technical Journals
- Children's Books
You might come to different conclusions about your writing
depending on which benchmark you compare it against. Focus on
the benchmark that's closest to your audience. THEN decide if
your writing should be edited.
Version 4.7
...........
We added a SECOND version of Pro~Scribe Express (PSE). Sent
to registered users, PSE is a RAM-resident program to give you
feedback on your writing WHILE YOU'RE WRITING. Just mark the
text on your screen, and PSE gives you instant feedback. The
new version of PSE gives you more feedback -- including a line-by-
line analysis of what's on the screen (like Pro~Scribe's "running
grade level" analysis).
We also added phrases to the Wasted.Wrd file -- to give you more
feedback on your writing.
Version 4.5/4.6: (registered users)
....................................
WORDPERFECT & MICROSOFT WORD
We added compatibility with WordPerfect (5.0) and Microsoft Word
files. You no longer need to convert files from these word pro-
cessors into Ascii/DOS Text format so Pro~Scribe can handle them.
Version 4.0: (registered users)
................................
THESAURUS
We added an on-line Thesaurus, PLUS a second program to help you
customize your thesaurus. BE SURE to read "Customizing Your
Thesaurus" in your manual for details.
FREQUENT.WRD -- Added Capacity
We also increased the capacity of the Frequent.Wrd option from 50 to
100 words (at the request of a registed user). The Frequent.Wrd option:
* Helps ensure your results are 'realistic'
* Prevents Pro~Scribe from nagging you about words you're
sure your audience understands.
EFFECTIVE, HIGH-IMPACT WRITING
We revised your second manual, adding more writing tips.
Version 3.x
...........
PS EXPRESS (registered users)
PS Express (PSE) is the RAM-resident (TSR) version of PS. That
means you run it once, and it waits in memory for you to call it up
when you need help most - while you're actually writing. Here's how:
* Run your word processor and start writing. Need Help? Press Alt-Space.
* PSE comes to life. Highlight the text you want PSE to examine, and,
before you can blink, a window pops up with comments about your
writing, and a summary of your words and sentences.
PSE is amazing, immensely helpful - like having an English teacher
looking over your shoulder, gently coaching you as you write.
See something you want to fix? Edit it, then call PSE up again to
see the improvements.
PSE may eliminate those long, frustrating write/edit/re-write cycles --
you edit as you go. PSE can save you enormous amounts of time!
WORD WASTERS
PS now scans your writing for the kinds of writing mistakes we all
make, the traps we fall into, at least once in awhile. We call
these traps Word Wasters - words or phrases that are wordy,
confusing, often misused, or just plain unnecessary. There are 5
categories:
* Wasted Words * Misused Words * Tongue Waggers
* Nouns-To-Verbs * Passive Voice
PS' Word Waster feature helps you eradicate the jargon and 'excess
baggage' from your writing. And you can customize this feature:
* Include your own 'pets' - jargon or phrases you want to avoid.
* Edit other peoples' work? Add the jargon they use/mistakes they make.
Then give them a copy of PS' results with your comments. Better yet,
ask THEM to run their work through PS BEFORE giving it to you.
RUNNING GRADE LEVEL - GRAPHIC AND PATTERN SUMMARIES, MUCH EASIER EDITING
PS' Running Grade Level (RGL) option shows the complexity of your
writing line-by-line. Earlier PS versions printed the RGL beside
your text. This remains, but we added TWO graphics showing you: 1)
On ONE screen, RGLs for 100s of lines of text; and, 2) Your sentence
patterns against an ideal. And version 3.5 adds an option flag
Complex Words & Word Wasters in EACH LINE. This makes editing your
writing MUCH easier.
FREQUENT.WRD (registered users)
PS flags the long, complex words you use. But some long words are
easily understood by most people (eg., 'sometimes'). PS shouldn't
nag you about these; now it doesn't have to. The Frequent.Wrd file
has words PS won't list as complex, nor will it flag these in RGL
reports. You can cus- tomize Frequent.Wrd: add long words you
think your audience understands.
SPEED
PS 3.x + is MUCH faster than earlier versions. Here's a comparison:
the time it took PS to analyze 3 different files. NOTE: While 3.x
does much more than earlier versions, it zips through much faster.
